The FAO have warned that bird flu is on the rise once more in parts of the world. A spokesperson at the FAO said that the new epidemic may see people catching the illness while on holiday and bringing it back home with them.
Bird flu first hit the news 8 years ago in 2003, which is a bug caused by the virus called H5N1 and it caused havoc among chicken farmers worldwide the last time it struck. It would seem that bird flu isn't easily spread from one human to another, but it does seem that some people are able to catch it from birds that are infected with the virus.
But when humans do catch the dreaded bird flu bug, it can cause serious illness and could ruin your holiday if you are abroad spending your hard earned cash. Most cases of infection have been caused by the consumption of infected raw or undercooked chicken, and so it is imperative that you ensure that you food is cooked properly when eating abroad.
The countries that bird flu is still affecting include Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, and it is said that if you end up with Egypt holiday illness, or sickness in any of the mentioned countries that you seek medical attention immediately.
The FAO confirmed that after seeing a decrease in the number of infections over the past few years, they are now concerned over an increase in reports of outbreaks over the past few months. They are advising that if you travel abroad that you avoid contact with birds and ensure that poultry is properly cooked or avoid it altogether if possible while travelling in these countries. Young travellers working with animals are most at risk, but if the right precautions are taken, you should be able to avoid the problem.
