Too Much Busyness Can Lead To Health Problems

By: Gen Wright

Medical research attributes anywhere from fifty to eighty per cent of all diseases to stress related origins. When people get busy they tend to cut corners on three most important factors that keep them healthy - proper exercise, healthy eating and sleep. If this goes on for long periods becoming unfit, weak and overweight is a given. It can even lead to serious health issues that can seriously affect the quality of life.

Our busy modern world doesn't help. We are all very busy, busier than even but we also are very inactive. We tend to sit a lot, in our cars, at our jobs and in our leisure time on the couch watching television or interacting with a screen of some sort. We are not required to do much physically any more and we only move in a few repetitive ways.

Our busyness is a virtue of our culture and we tend to admire people who have the ability to get more done in less time but this does cause us stress which if not managed can affect our health. For starters being busy is not a fitness solution. We still need the vigorous movement that our bodies are hardwired to perform but no longer get to do. Things like to run, lift, bend down, reach and stretch, climb and carry stuff.

Unfortunately, the same prosperity that makes us such a wealthy and successful society is what is slowly corroding our bodies and our health. Our bodies were not made to sit in chairs behind a computer screen all day. They must have enough muscular movement to stimulate the 'growth and repair' hormones that give instructions to the cells to renew and replace themselves. Without this stimulus decay and deterioration sets in and we enter a downward spiral of declining health.

If we have a few (or many) years under our belt this spiral is faster. Somehow if you value your health and future you must get off the 'busy' treadmill that leads to nowhere but health troubles somewhere down the road. Overworked, under-rested, unfit, overstressed people need time out to tap into nurturing self care to become better jugglers and to stave off stress related illness.

To effectively manage stress and chronic 'busyness', you need to become a better caregiver to yourself as extra demands are placed on your body. The way to do this is to have a proper exercise program in place. This program needs to be set up properly by a fitness professional and must contain mostly strength training exercise.

Proper strength training exercise is so efficient that just 2-3 sessions each week will be adequate to get the very best results. Forget wasting precious time on old fashioned and outdated exercise techniques like long slow endurance activities like walking, jogging or cycling. Keep these if you have time left over as part of an active lifestyle but put your energy and effort into an exercise program that works the muscular system through its full ranges of movement under a load.

If your day is crazy and you are in constant motion, pulled in many directions at once, eating on the run, and barely having time to stop and connect with anyone least of all yourself you need to listen up. Too much doing, being, going and giving will take a toll, physical, mentally and emotionally. So, make the right decision and move some of it over for some time out so you can re-center and recalibrate yourself a few times each week.

You will get more done in the long run as you will be able to dissipate the stress levels, make better decisions and problem solve a whole lot better. Your exercise time will not take anything away from you it will actually make you more productive and successful and certainly a lot healthier and stronger. Try it and see for yourself.
